WSO Award for Contribution to Clinical Stroke Research
Joseph Broderick (USA)

Joseph P. Broderick, MD, is Professor of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Broderick graduated summa cum laude with distinction from Xavier University with an Honors Bachelor of the Arts in 1978. In 1982, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School where he ranked first in his medical school class. He received his medical neurologic training and completed a Cerebrovascular fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 1987. He returned to the University of Cincinnati in 1987 and served as Chair of the Department of Neurology from 4/2000 to 12/2013 at which time he assumed Directorship of the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute.

Dr. Broderick is an internationally recognized expert on the treatment and underlying causes of stroke. He currently is the Principal Investigator of the National Coordinating Center for the NIH funded network of stroke trials as well as the Principal Investigator for the global FASTEST Trial and a multiple PI for the MOST Trial. Dr. Broderick’s two-fold passion is to improve the treatment and outcome of stroke patients world-wide, and to have world class patient care and research for all areas of neurologic disease at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Broderick has been a very active member of the American Heart and Stroke Association since early in his academic career and has served in both regional and national leadership roles within the organization. He is also a proud member of the World Stroke Organization.

Dr. Broderick’s contributions to advancing stroke treatment, research, and education are reflected in multiple awards including the Daniel Drake Medal at the University of Cincinnati in 2010, the national American Heart Association Clinical Research Prize in 2011 (the first stroke physician to receive the award), the University of Cincinnati William Howard Taft Medal for Notable Achievement in 2013, and the World Stroke Organization Award for Contribution to Clinical Stroke Research in 2020. He has also been awarded with the William B. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke by the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, the Healthcare Heroes Award for Innovation by the Cincinnati Business Courier, and the Samuel Kaplan Visionary Research Award by the American Heart Association. In addition, Dr. Broderick has also served the Cincinnati community as a Board Member of UC Health from 2010 to 2020.

Katharina Stibrant-Sunnerhagen (Sweden)

Dr. Katharina Stibrant Sunnerhagen is professor and chair in Rehabilitation Medicine, head at the department of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Gothenburg and also serves as a senior consultant at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. She has been a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway as well as Riga Stradin’s University, Latvia. Since the early 1990’s she has been active in stroke care and research. This involves longitudinal studies as well as intervention studies, covers muscle, muscle function, spasticity, cognition, life situation and the use of new technology; quantitative as well as qualitative research. She has authored more than 275 papers in international peer reviewed journals with and H-index of 59. She is the chair of the scientific committee of the Swedish stroke organization. She has served as Swedish representative in the ESPRM and UESM. She is an ESPRM Senior fellow. She is a a fellow and previous board member of the European Stroke Organization. She was involved in the development of “Action Plan for Stroke in Europe 2018 – 2030. She was nominated by the World Stroke Organization and now serves as the stroke expert at WHO Rehabilitation 2030. Prof Sunnerhagen teaches at all levels and different professions, supervises students in a multiprofessional environment. She sees patients at the neurointesive care, neurosurgery and the stroke unit as well as at the rehabilitation medicine unit and long-term outpatient clinics.
